Thanks to modern dentistry, dentures are more comfortable than ever.

They are the simplest and most cost-effective way to replace missing teeth, however, they’re not for everyone.

At Shine Dental we can go through the options available and advise on the best choice for you. Smile, eat, and speak with confidence, we’re here to help.

Denture Stabilisation

Denture stabilisation is a process undertaken to improve the stability, comfort and effectiveness of a person’s dentures.

There are several methods to stabilise dentures, however the most effective (and long-term) is to use dental implants to anchor the denture. Dental implants are inserted into the jaw bone and replace the root portion of missing teeth.

One of the biggest concerns about dentures is that they will come loose (or even fall out) at the most inconvenient moment. This can be both embarrassing and distressing. With the use of implants to stabilise a denture this won’t happen and so patients are provided with peace of mind.

Advantages of Dental Implants

There are many benefits to using implants as a way of stabilising a denture.

  • Improved speech
  • Improved ability to chew
  • Reduced risk of irritation by denture rubbing and moving
  • Enhanced aesthetics
  • Enhanced comfort
  • Prevents the need for new dentures

If you would like to know more about Denture Stabilisation, contact Shine Dental. We can help you decide which method is right for you.

Types of dentures

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures will be ready to wear on the same day as your teeth are extracted – they can be in the form of a partial or a complete denture. Immediate dentures are more of a temporary measure and it may be a few months of waiting for your gums to heal after such treatment before you can have the final dentures.

Having a set of immediate dentures prevents people from having to spend many weeks without any teeth and allows them to get on with their normal lives. They are not as effective as permanent dentures but they restore a degree of function and are an attractive alternative to having no teeth.

Cobalt Chrome Dentures

The use of metal dentures could provide several benefits to the lives of denture wearers who have experienced a lack of confidence or previously loose plastic dentures. A primary benefit of wearing metal dentures is that they are custom-made to ensure it is compatible with the tissue of the mouth in a bid to remove the risk of allergic reactions or gum irritations completely.

The clasps which attach around the remaining teeth help to improve denture retention and they are also very discreet. They are smaller than acrylic dentures and do not fully cover the roof of the mouth, unlike the acrylic dentures. This means your taste sensation is improved, which means you can taste food better than if the roof of your mouth was fully covered.

They are also extremely durable and are less likely to break or bend out of shape. They also maximise comfort for the wearer and are easier to speak in. The snug fit of the appliance when placed into the mouth means it is very comfortable to wear, which could bring relief for people who have been worried about the feeling of an alien object in their mouth for a long time.

Acrylic Dentures

Dentures of this kind are typically cheaper to manufacture and require a less sophisticated design than others. These pink acrylic dentures are supported mainly by the gums. While the plastic components can surround the existing teeth in the mouth, they do not gain any substantial levels of stability from them. Some acrylic partial fittings feature metal clips for better retention. They are the most common type of denture.

There are several benefits for denture wearers of this kind. The presence of teeth helps to provide a natural facial appearance and can provide support for the lips and cheeks which can often take on a ‘collapsed’ appearance in patients with missing teeth. They provide you with the ability to chew food and your speech would be much improved. Consequently, dentures can not only boost the health and appearance of the mouth and face, but also body as a whole.

All dentures of this nature are finished in high-impact acrylic, meaning they can stand up to the wear and tear that affects teeth daily.
